Email Subject: Prioritize People with Down syndrome for COVID-19 Vaccine!

Dear Senator/Representative [LAST NAME],

I’m writing to ask for your support in prioritizing individuals with Down syndrome to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in category 1b. This matters to me because my [YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO INDIVIDUAL WITH DOWN SYNDROME: child, sibling, grandchild, friend, etc.] has Down syndrome.

On December 23rd, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added Down syndrome as a condition that increases the risk of severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19. The CDC defines severe illness as, “hospitalization, admission to the ICU, intubation or mechanical ventilation, or death.”

While some states have already moved to vaccinate individuals with Down syndrome, the Illinois Department of Public Health has not been willing to move them from category 1c to 1b. Due to their increased risk, I am urging you to contact the Illinois Department of Public Health and request that individuals with Down syndrome be moved to category 1b.

Thank you for your consideration. We appreciate all you do in advocating for our community.

Sincerely,

[Your First and Last Name]

[Your Town]

Hannah Spenadel
