Support for Spanish Speaking Families

In recent years, the demand for our services in Spanish has greatly increased, and we have responded to that demand by expanding the support we provide to Spanish speaking families. We now have a bilingual Coordinator, Roselia Tello, who is able to talk to families in Spanish and assess what they need. She provides support and information to parents when they first find out their baby has Down syndrome, and she remains in close contact with families as their child develops. We are increasing the services we have available in Spanish, including providing workshops in Spanish, forming support groups for Hispanic families, and training additional bilingual volunteers for our Parent Support program. We are also strengthening our collaboration with other organizations already serving the Hispanic population in Chicago, such as Hispanic outreach agencies, the Hispanic Team at the Institute on Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as the staff at the Adult Down Syndrome Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge (which is operated in partnership with NADS). Through these expanded services, we hope to ensure that children with Down syndrome in Spanish speaking families are able to access the resources available to them and receive the help they need to reach their potential.
