NADS Holiday Appeal

Dear Friend,

During 2007, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended screening all pregnant women for Down syndrome and other conditions, regardless of age—leading, perhaps, to fewer children with Down syndrome being born. These recommendations have caused much stress within our community because we know firsthand the value and beauty of our children with Down syndrome.

Here are our reflections on what the world would miss if we didn’t have children and adults with Down syndrome: There would be:

• Less love
• Less honesty
• Less goodness
• Less charm
• Less warmth
• Less joy
• Fewer celebrations of the little and big things in life
• Fewer hugs for everyone

During the holiday season we celebrate all the gifts that our children and adults with Down syndrome bring to us every day. We search for ways to help them to live good, productive lives. We advocate for innovative services to maximize their gifts and talents and we work with and treasure our children who are more significantly challenged.
