Adult Down Syndrome Center

A collaboration between NADS and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, the Adult Down Syndrome Center is one of the few clinics in the world devoted to adolescents and adults with Down syndrome. It was the first of its kind and remains unique in its interdisciplinary approach to patient care. Dr. Brian Chicoine, the Medical Director, Dr. Dennis McGuire, the Director of Psychosocial services, and Janet Bilodeau, the Nurse Practitioner, work closely with each other and with other staff members to determine the best treatment for their patients. Because they treat the whole person, they are able to address the complex relationship between physical and emotional health and help their patients lead fuller lives.

Since the Center was founded in 1992, staff members have seen thousands of teens and adults with Down syndrome, ranging in age from 12 to 84. As the reputation of the Center has grown, the demand for its services has also grown. At this point, the Center has more than 3,000 patients and more than 5,000 patient visits a year. The Center also gets many calls from families across the United States, though at the moment it does not have the resources to take on new out-of-state patients.
