The Chicagoland D.A.D.S. Chapter emerged two years ago with assistance from The National Association for Down Syndrome (NADS) and D.A.D.S. National. The group has grown and 2012 has been a banner year for us.
Chicagoland D.A.D.S. operates with the same mission as D.A.D.S. National: To assist and support, through fellowship and action, the fathers and families of individuals with Down syndrome in the area surrounding Chicago Illinois. Here is how we do it:
We support not only NADS - our sponsor organization, but all of the Down syndrome related support groups in the Chicagoland area. We assisted UPS for DownS in building their Labor Day float for a parade in Schaumburg, Illinois. We Supported Gigi's Playhouse by participating in their annual 5K, and we volunteered with DS Support, who puts on the Chicagoland Buddy Walk. To assist NADS, our DADS group organized the annual Down syndrome awareness day at a Kane County Cougars minor League baseball game this past summer.
Along with our monthly D.A.D.S. gatherings at Emmett's Pub in Downers Grove Illinois, our dads enjoyed fellowship with a golf outing, and at our Annual Summer BBQ. We invite moms to our BBQ to join the fun.
When it comes to action - Members Tom Delaney and Steve Connors represented Chicagoland D.A.D.S. at the NDSS BuddyWalk on Washington where, along with several self advocates, we met with 4 Illinois Members of Congress, and Senator Richard Durbin.
Chicagoland D.A.D.S. will be hosting a workshop at the NADS 2012 Conference on Down Syndrome on Saturday, September 29th. We look forward to sharing our mission and making some connections with new dads in our area. More information about Chicagoland D.A.D.S. can be found at our website: www.chicagoland-dads.org.
